As well as the artistry of the ironwork, it is the little marks of the passage of time and life that have added themselves to the covers that make these images so fascinating.

Not unlike some of your Irish ones, actually. Maybe there’s an international convention on how manhole covers should look.

I suppose some elements of the designs are universally practical – it’s the little differences added by individual designers that appeal to me!
